Renovations to the 15,000 SF Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters included complete demolition and reconfiguration of the mechanical and electrical systems within the third-floor space and integration of the reconfigured medical gas and vacuum systems. Work was phased to allow the PICU and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on the above floor to remain occupied and operational during renovations. Clancy & Theys accomplished the work with tight noise, odor, dust, and vibration restrictions.
The interior was designed to create a more efficient workflow for the staff and a more positive environment for the patients and their families. The new rooms were transformed from old curtain bay areas with no privacy to private, spacious rooms with private restrooms and family seating areas. The new rooms were also adaptable to accommodate the isolation needs of patients. Installing the medical equipment booms was a key component and involved significant coordination between the team and the vendor. This new equipment provides staff with easy access to the needed equipment while minimizing disruptions and movement of the child. The old nurses’ station was completely demolished and rebuilt on the same centralized footprint. The position of the rooms relative to the centralized nurses’ station provides patients, family, and visitors with clear views of the nurses and the calming, changing lights above. The modernized nurses’ stations are refined to accommodate dedicated docking areas for the equipment away from the path of travel.
