Barry Art Museum at Old Dominion University

Overview

Situated at the corner of Hampton Boulevard and 43rd Street, across from the Ted Constant Convocation Center, the new two-story, 24,000 SF museum is located in the heart of Old Dominion University’s campus and Norfolk’s emerging Arts District. It houses art from the collection of benefactors Richard and Carolyn Barry, including many early modern American paintings and Studio Art Glass works.

In addition to the main gallery space, the museum features separate galleries for guest, faculty and student exhibits; special event and administrative areas; and a landscaped courtyard, observation deck and water fountain. On the outside, the focal point of the museum is its curved glass curtain wall at the building’s entrance.

Overall, the Barry Art Museum project was extremely complex in terms of design, construction, and even the installation of the art and required a collaborative, team approach.
