North Carolina Governor's Mansion Raleigh, N.C. Clancy & Theys first worked on the mansion in 1976, when it performed a total interior restoration of the 37,000 square foot building which was originally constructed in 1891. This included re-finishing the grand staircase to its original stained finish, removing and paint stripping crown moldings and doors, repainting them with original details, and refinishing floors. The exposed conduit electrical wiring and exposed pipe heating and plumbing systems were removed and modern plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems were installed. Basement waterproofing, masonry improvements, and construction of a stair tower were also accomplished. Recent projects have included restoration of kitchen and main ballroom. Exterior renovation involved a substantial amount of fine carpentry handwork, as rotted timber structural elements on the mansion's veranda were replaced. Reclaimed redwood timbers were purchased from a supplier in California, and then hand-tooled by Clancy & They's craftsmen. This was a public project and would normally have been a bid job. The legislature granted special exception to policy to allow the North Carolina State Government to select a contractor with the ability to handle the delicate detail work required for this job.
